Location of the Snyder Herbein Burial Ground

The Herbein Snyder burial Ground was surrounded by stone wall with gate. Burials were moved to Spies Zion Church Cemetery in May, 1984. A marker for existence of burial site, as well as the new location, placed along Bieber Mill Road at entrance to quarry.

At left is the notice from the Reading Eagle, which stated that the remains and stones were to be reinterred “in as nearly as possible, the same relative positions as before disinterment.” The former caretaker at Spies Zion Church Cemetery, Dorothy Bridygham, now aged 92, said the stones and remains had to be laid out EXACTLY as they were originally.

If Eastern Industries held true to the court order, then the original site should correspond to the Spies Zion Church arrangement.

The location of the burial ground is now a retention pond in the quarry, about 60 feet off the northwestern shore at coordinates 40.357203 North by 75.793230 West.

The clearest aerial is from 1968. In this aerial, a single pixel represents about a 22 by 22 inch square. The cemetery is 16 by 16 pixels, making the cemetery about 29 to 30 feet square. Clip from the 1968 aerial:

Eastern Industries appears to have abided by the court order and faithfully relocated and preserved the arrangement of the original site.
